Pinehurst is a small town in Robeson County, North Carolina, United States. It was founded in 1868 by General James Longstreet and his brigade of Confederate veterans as a post on the Cumberland River. The growing population of Pinehurst prompted the creation of a school district in 1870, and the initial construction of schools were completed only in 1874. In 1916, Pinehurst became one of thirty-six townships within Robeson County that formed the Robeson County Borough. The current incarnation of Pinehurst began to form with its incorporation as a municipality on December 17, 1949, following an election held that same year in which both Township and Municipal officials were elected to two-year terms with no possibility for re-election.
Pinehurst was founded in 1714 by a group of Loyalist farmers. The area became a munitions works in the Revolutionary War, and then an agricultural center during the 19th century. In 1887, Pinehurst became part of Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1951, it became a city.
