In 1786, a group of men from North Carolina traveled to Pinehurst in order to find a new place to settle. They were unsuccessful and returned home, but they brought back with them the idea of creating a bullet-resistant fortification in the state. The first attempt was made in 1812 and it did not work well. Two years later, the men again tried and this time succeeded. A small fort was built and named Fort Brooke after General James Buchanan who helped lead the attack on Fort Donelson in Tennessee. It was used as an artillery installation until 1863 when it was surrendered by Confederate forces. In 1865, Union troops destroyed all of the structures except for one which still stands today known as Battery Gregg.

In 1951 Pinehurst merged with Ansonia (then known as Apex) to become one of two towns in Alamance County that were both under 1 million people; both towns have since shrunken significantly but remain important cultural tourist destinations due to their unique histories and significance within their communities. The name of the town comes from Pinehurst Mountain, which is located near the town center. The mountain's peak is visible from most of the town, and it has been said that Pinehurst was named for a pine tree that grew on the mountain. They started out as simpletons and quickly realized that they needed an accessible place to market their crops and sell their goods. So they built a mill on Town Creek and began trading with other parts of the county. By 1830, they had erected a log cabin and started making some repairs to it. In 1832, they organized themselves into a company and built a store on Main Street. This became their nucleus around which all future development took shape. In 1835, two brothers named John Waddell founded Waddell & Son candlemakers in what is now Rutherford County (near where Pinehurst sits). This business generated such success that by 1840 it had become one of the leading candle manufacturers in North Carolina (and even worldwide). Over time, Waddell & Son developed other businesses including lumber yards and real estate interests – many of which remain active today. In 1861, Waddell was part of an group who bought 12 square miles (30 km²) of land east of downtown Pinehurst from General David Johnston for $5 million USD; this area would later become known as West Parkland.) With its booming economy came increased social unrest throughout much of antebellum America due to class distinctions between wealthy planters and poor laborers or “natives” (as these people were called).
