Pinehurst is a town in Forsyth County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Durham–Chapel Hill Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Pinehurst was Christopher Thorne in 1775. He and his family built their log cabin on the banks of the Neuse River. When hostilities between Great Britain and America escalated in 1776, Thorne decided to flee what he considered an unjust war. He and his wife journeyed northeast through North Carolina until they reached Philadelphia where they boarded a ship for England. They had no idea that their Cabin would soon become known as Pinehurst after General James Pinckney's Battle of Camden Bridge which left British troops stranded on American soil. Shortly after the signing of the Treaty of Paris following the American Revolution, Cherokee Chief John Ross moved from his home at Musgrove Court House on Rockingham Island to purchase some land east of Chapel Hill for himself and his followers only to find that there were already settlers living there! So when Governor Tryon offered him 160 acres (64 hectares) of land near present-day Pinehurst on January 25, 1781, Ross took up the offer without giving it further thought! In 1819 Nicholas Biddle erected a small frame house at milepost 9½ (2 miles) south-southeast of present day Pinehurst on Pigeon Forge Creek by damming it with logs from nearby Old Bald Head Mountain; this became Biddle's Homeplace Museum today! There were two other early pioneers - Elijah White and Ebenezer Fenton - but these men are unknown to history because they never developed any significant businesses or published any accounts about their lives! It was not until 1868 that Reverend Daniel Boone came across land north of current day Pinehurst Road which he donated to Baptist missionaries under the name "Lenoir Valley". The Rev. Boone also built many buildings including a church and convent here in what is now Oakwood Cemetery before dying in 1871 at age 47 years old! This event marked one thousand years since European settlers first set foot in what is now Forsyth County – more than 4 decades before Elmira (New York) became known as "Pinehurd" due to its proximity to that city! In 1912 Pinnacle Mining Company drilled an well just east of present day Pinehurst Road which produced water table oil reserves…this led directly to development around Pinehurst over time as local businessmen leased or bought property adjacent to Pinnacle Minefield while also selling services related thereto such as groundwater disposal, water filtration and chlorination etc., creating an ever-changing landscape cloaked within industry!!! Today much remains unchanged despite major changes over time such as increased traffic along Interstate 95 leading eventually directly into Gastonia/Chapel Hill (& surrounding areas), loss or degradation of natural resources & infrastructure etc.–none more so then during periods like these when community cohesion & self-reliance are essential!!
