Pinehurst is a small town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. The name "Pinehurst" derives from the old English word "pinewood," meaning a wood of pine trees. The hamlet was founded in 1853 by John Crayton and his family as part of a movement to move away from tobacco country. The community lies on the eastern edge of Gaston County and is adjacent to both Charlotte and Raleigh, two of the largest cities in North Carolina. It is located on Highway 321 between Gaston and Durham counties and has a post office with ZIP code 28637. The early settlers were farmers who grew corn, hay, cotton, potatoes, apples, peaches, and other vegetables while keeping pigs and cows. There are still some farms in Pinehurst today that produce crops such as Haynesville potatoes or onions; these operations were started by George Beasley after he purchased land east of town in 1907. In 1924 Donny McAfee became one of the first African American landowners when he bought an eighty-acre (30 ha) tract north of town from Wm Hite. He made it his dairy farm which continued until 1984 when it was sold to Dick Butts development company which renamed it Dairy Downs Farm Incorporated Pinehurst's main industry for many years has been agriculture but there are now several businesses in town including veterinary services (Dairy Springs Veterinary Medical Associates), real estate (John Crayton Realty), law enforcement services (North Carolina State Patrol), golf courses (Blue Ridge Golf Club), pharmacies (CVS/pharmacyWorks/Gaston County Pharmacy), restaurants (Johnny Rockets Pizza Place/McAfee's restaurant) On July 12th 2009 Pinehurst voters passed an amendment to their local ordinances defining marriage as one man one woman only with no recognition given to different marriages performed outside the state within fifty miles thereof without prior notification This amendment followed similar ordinance changes passed by other towns across North Carolina

Pinehurst is a small town located in the Pender County area of North Carolina. The population was 2,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to Pinehurst were James Robertson and his family who moved from Scotland in 1800. They built a log cabin on a hill near what is now downtown Pinehurst. James Robertson's son John established another log cabin in 1827 which still stands today as Pinehurst Hall. In 1835, two brothers, William and Richard Weems, bought a farm south of town and set about building a house on it which they named home "Weems' Hill". In 1865, Daniel Boone came to North Carolina with his party and started up the Catawba River towards modern day Greensboro. Heading west he passed through what is now Pinehurst on his way to find new land for farming purposes. Upon reaching what is now known as Weems' Hill, he stopped for lunch and rested here before continuing downriver until he reached the present day city of Greensboro where he founded Roanoke Rapids. After crossing Roanoke Rapids, Boone continued downriver until he reached Fayetteville again where he rested for the night before continuing on his journey to Morganton (now Dalton). Here he met Majestic Chief Powhatan who told him that there was enough land east of Danville available for him to settle should he choose to make this move but Boone decided against it because his wife had been married off at age 16 to an Englishman name John Cranch so there was no way for him to establish himself permanently in America - though some have argued that this decision may have been due partly to pressure from Majestic Chief Powhatan.) In 1868 Rev. Father Jameson founded Stonewall Presbyterian Church in Pinehurst which quickly became one of the largest Presbyterian congregations in America with over 1,000 members inside and outside of town limits! Reverend Father Jameson would later become pastor emeritus at Stonewall Presbyterian Church wherehe still leads services every Sunday morning since 2001! Reverend Father Jameson also served as speaker from 1978-1986 during Gov Jerry Brown's first term as governor of California! A number of businesses were also erected around this time such as J B Hunt grocery store opened in 1911 followed by W H Alexander tobacco store opened 1923 & 1926 respectively both closed within 5 years however J B Hunt reopened in early 1970s & continues operation today albeit under different ownership Later on other stores such as Woolworths occurred along with many homes becoming busy commercial/residential areas including Griggs Hardware Store 1922-1925; First National Bank 1929-1930; Rankin Piano Co 1925-1928; Patsy Cline songwriters office 1935-1960s; Glencoe Bakehouse Inc 1966-. Many residents began moving out during this time period giving rise to what is now known as "The Old Town" or simply "Pinehurst". There are several churches remaining standing today including First Presbyterian Church 1908-1959; Reformed EpiscopalChurch 1930s - current location; Stonebriar BaptistChurch 1950s - current location;; Hamilton Road United MethodistChurch 1954-. Many families continue living within walking distance or less depending upon their needs & activities ( email me if you'd like more information about any particular church) .
