It was during this time that Newton developed his theories about gravity and motion through experiments with cups (and later balls) at home and at university laboratories. In 1704, at the ripe age of 27 years old, Newton became an Associate Professor at Trinity College in Cambridge where he taught until his death on July 28th, 1727. During his time there he made great strides in mathematical physics which led him to develop calculus which is still used today by mathematicians throughout the world; while also developing mechanics which helps us understand how objects move through space-time
In 1795, a group of men from Newton, North Carolina started a small farmstead on the banks of the Catawba River. The area that is now Newton was part of the Cherokee Nation at the time. The men named their farmstead "Newton" in honor of Dr. John Wesley Newton, an early exponent of Methodism in North Carolina. In 1801, they moved to what is now Wellsboro and began to grow corn, wheat, peas and other crops. In 1815, they became members of the Baptist Church and built their first church there. They also started a school for children in what is now Wellsboro. In 1827, they built a larger home near present-day Nortonville and continued to grow crops and raise livestock until 1830 when they sold their land to James Covington Sr., one of the founders of Nortonville. In 1830-1831, Covington acquired some additional land which he used for farming until his death in 1865. From 1865 to 1870, Newton served as chairman of trustees for Greenwood Cemetery which was then located just east of town along US Highway 3603 (now US Highway 301). On July 4th 1870, Newton's remains were interred at Greenwood Cemetery together with those of his wife Sarah and two young daughters: Caroline and Isabella (baptized December 8th 1860). After his death in 1865, Mrs. Newton took over running the cemetery until her death on October 15th 1901; she was 95 years old at the time. Mrs.-Newton's husband John had died less than two years earlier on February 9th 1865 after a long and successful life as a farmer and public servant in Northern Carolina
