The first documented use of a gun sling was in 1851 when Major General Richard H. Johnson used one to shoot at a buffalo from a distance. Gun slings were also used by Confederate soldiers during the war. In 1909, Newton's mayor placed an order for 100 gun slings from London. A few years later, the city obtained its own gunslingers' company which imported firearms into Newton by boat. The company manufactured pistols and shotguns and provided services such as target Shooting, duck hunting, fishing trips and shootings on Sundays. There are several accounts of people being killed with guns while swinging from trees or buildings in Newton during the early 1900s. One account says that two men were killed while hanging from a tree; another said that three men died after being shot out of a building while hanging from a rope dubbed "The Tree of Death." In 1924, Mayor Ernest Fenton installed a steel railing around the edge of City Hall which allowed people to swing their rifles over it while firing them at targets within range; this activity became known as "Gun Slinging Hill." Fenton also sponsored an annual rifle competition called the Balloon Shoot at which teams shot baskets off skyscrapers using Winchesters (later replaced with handguns). In 1929, President Hoover issued an executive order forbidding anyone under 30 years old to own any weapons without written permission from his or her parent or guardian. Newton was born in the town of Newton, North Carolina on May 5, 1703. He was a son of Nicholas and Eliza (Ferguson) Newton. At the age of thirteen, he moved with his family to Durham County, North Carolina. There he studied mathematics under Dr. Isaac Newton and natural philosophy under Dr. Thomas Young. In 1727 Newton graduated from Trinity College in Cambridge, England with a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and science. After graduation, Newton returned to North Carolina and worked as a tutor at King's College until 1730 when he became an associate professor at Duke University in Chapel Hill where he remained until his death on February 4, 1781. During his time at Duke University, Newton made significant contributions to astronomy and calculus while also developing new ways to study nature through experiments and observation. His work on optics helped develop modern photography while also providing insights into light scattering by materials such as snowflakes and rainbows. In addition to his scholarly works, Newton is most recognized for his role in developing the theory of gravity which explained how planets respond to gravity despite being far away from Earth. In fact, it was during this time that Newtons theory led to the development of calculus which has been used by scientists throughout history for various purposes including solving problems in engineering and physics alike

In 1704, he was named professor of mathematics and astronomy at UNC- Chapel Hill. Newton developed calculus and published two papers on it in 1714 and 1716 respectively. He is also recognized for his work on optics and lenses. After several years of research into light theory, Newton published his famous book Opticks (1727). This book helped bring about the modern scientific revolution and laid the groundwork for today's physics.
