The Newton Volunteer Fire Department was organized on December 15, 1914, with twenty members and an initial budget of $2,500 dollars. On October 1st of that year, Newton became an official fire department with five members and an annual budget of $10 thousand dollars In 1947 Newton had its first library which served as the main branch for all of Swain County until 1978 when it moved to Raleigh In 1951 Newton had its second library which served as the main branch for all of Swain County until 2001 when it moved to Durham On July 1st of 2003 Newton had its third library which serves as their current library . It is also home to theTown Meeting Hall which is used for meetings
Newton, North Carolina was founded by white settlers in 1775. The town was named for John Newton, an Englishman who helped lead the British army during the Revolutionary War. Newton served as a delegate to the state constitutional convention in 1787 and1788. In 1792, Newton became a town charter member and also served on the first North Carolina General Assembly. He died in 1802.
