Newton is a city in Swain County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Swain County and part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. Newton was founded in 1728 by John Locke and James Robertson as a small community on what is now called "Locke's Creek." The first white settler, Nathaniel Childers, arrived in 1730 and developed what is now downtown Newton. In 1735, Rutherford College was established in Newton as the first university in North Carolina. In 1800, a post office was established at Newton with the name Catawba River Post Office until it changed to Newton on December 12 of that year. In 1802, both Catawba River Post Office and Rutherford College were closed due to increasing postage rates for letters sent through railroads. In 1807-1808, Nathaniel Bacon designed and built the first brick courthouse in South Carolina; it still stands today at 5th Street/Old McGee Road near his plantation home (now within walking distance of Newton). On February 14th, 1809 – just one day after General Robert Ewing burned down much of Charleston – Nathaniel Bacon donated land to make way for Trinity Church which would eventually become Episcopal Cathedral across from Catawba River Park today. In 1830 - when North Carolina became a state – new towns began to be founded all over the state including Newton where Reverend Abraham Lincoln served as pastor from 1865 until his death two years later. Reverend Atherton Washington called Newtons "the most British town I have ever seen" because so many people there had been born or raised Englishmen! Many well known local citizens such as lawyer Emory Daniel Wilder came from England or Scotland: astronomer Edwin Hubble also spent some time living here before coming back to America during World War II! In 1880 - when Drury Institute opened its doors - 8 students lived on campus with 3 instructors who labored each day across three floors serving 269 students ranging from 7th grade through college level classes taught jointly by male and female teachers under one roof! Today Drury Institute remains an important academic institution with undergraduate courses ranging from business administration to engineering science&mathematics while graduate programs include law enforcement & criminal justice studies among others...Many famous local residents throughout our history including Revs Edmund Randolph Spellman (founder & president of Baptist Convention USA), Drudy's namesake Willis Hargrave Caldwell (founder & CEO of Allstate)and more are graduates or alumni of Drury Institutes…Today we continue this tradition by awarding degrees such as Bachelors degree in Business Administration*, Master’s degree*in Criminal Justice Studies*and Doctorate degrees*in Law Enforcement Studies*.
