New Bern, North Carolina is a town located in the Granville County, North Carolina region. The population was 5,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. New Bern's history dates back to 1738 when English soldiers founded a fort here during the French and Indian War. The town grew rapidly from this point on and by 1853 it had 2,500 residents. In 1864 New Bern became an incorporated town and by 1870 it had 4,000 residents. During Reconstruction (1865-1877) New Bern became one of the most prosperous towns in South Carolina due to its connection to cotton plantations and its position as a transportation hub for goods reaching Confederate General Robert E. Lee's armies during the Civil War. The post-war years were difficult for Newbern as many of its factories closed down or moved away while people lost their jobs in the postwar boom period that followed World War II. However, some new businesses started up such as Manufacturing Associates Inc., which manufactured radios and televisions; First Baptist Church which built a Presbyterian church; and Creative Arts Unlimited which began making clocks and watches within two years after independence from Great Britain in 1948. These businesses helped revive Newbern during the late 1950s through early 1960s despite difficulties with joblessness among older residents caused by technological changes such as television sets being sold direct rather than through Sears Roebuck & Co.'s store chains. In 1971 local officials decided that they would no longer support local agriculture because prices for corn had increased too much relative to other commodities over time; instead they developed a plan to import feed grains from Oklahoma City so that food could be raised closer to people's homes without having to go far into rural areas where there was little access to ground water or other resources necessary for growth.[2] This introduction of mass produced foods did not work well enough both economically[3][4] but also emotionally[5][6] so in 1978 Mayor John Sitton proposed creating what is now known as "The Park" inside of downtown where people could picnic,[7] walk their dogs,[8][9][10] play basketball[11], roller skate[12], or just hang out.[13][14] Since then The Park has been home to numerous events including Art Walk,[15],[16],[17],[18], Farmer's Market Fridays,[19], Bluegrass Festivals,[20],[21], Renaissance Faire weekend experiences,[22],[23],[24], Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony 2017,[25]; etcetera

Afterward, many white settlers moved into the town while some African American residents stayed behind to work in plantations. Despite its recent history and growth, much of New Bern's infrastructure still remains from before it was founded as a Village (1639). For example, the first school in New Bern opened in 1792; today’s old high school is still standing and serves as a museum open to the public. Additionally, several streets are still named after early settlers such as Nicholas van der Novum or John Whitehead Jr.. Most importantly though, since 2000-2006 any major renovations have happened within walking distance of most citizens which has made life more affordable and easy for everyone living here!
