When Foust moved to Chapel Hill to become an Episcopal priest he left behind his memorable childhood home which still stands today - one of only two houses remaining from that time period still standing in downtown Chapel Hill!
New Bern was founded in 1749 by the English colonists as a trading post on the Cape Fear River. The town grew rapidly and by 1820 had a population of over 12,000. New Bern became an important commercial center and its location made it the perfect place to develop new transportation methods such as canal construction. In 1814, the town was renamed Carolina after King George III of England.
