New Bern is a town in Wilson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 8,539 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wilson County. New Bern is located on the Savannah River and is part of the Asheville metropolitan area. New Bern was founded by English colonists in 1734 as a trading post on Catawba's (later Albemarle) Peninsula. In 1802, it became an incorporated town under the name of Newbern after its incorporation into North Carolina. The city of Charlotte took over the town's municipal government in 1884 and renamed it New Bern; however, Newbern retain full civic rights until 1984 when they were merged with Wilson County to form one entity. The first white settler in what would become Newbern arrived in 1734 aboard HMS "Eagle" from Portsmouth, England along with eleven other men under Captain John Smith Jr.. They built a trading post known as Fort George on Catawba's Peninsula and began operations fur trade with Native Americans which continued until 1736 when English forces burned down the post and all remaining supplies were lost overboard. In 1802, following annexation by North Carolina from Georgia, Newbern became an independent municipality within Wilson County subject to certain local regulations set forth by that state Legislature including prohibition against whiskey sales and gambling establishments although these limitations did not apply to citizens of neighboring Charlotte who had already become established as dominant commercial interests in that community. On November 12, 1830 Hurricane Floyd swept through Charleston causing extensive destruction throughout South Carolina including much damage done to Charleston but no damage or loss occurred unto Wilmington where Old World shipping stopped for fear of storm surges caused by Floyd’s track). Although less destructive than similar storms such as Hurricane Andrew which struck White House Plantation near Jacksonville Florida two years later), Floyd made landfall east-northeast of Wilmington at about 5 p.m., making it one of deadliest Atlantic hurricanes ever recorded with fatalities estimated at least 50% plus many more injured or homeless among more than 1 million people living within three miles (3 km) thereof according to USGS reports issued prior to death certificates being published four days following landfall). New Bern, North Carolina is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina and the county seat of New Bern County. The population was 997 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in western Alamance County by population. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The downtown district contains many historical buildings, including the original courthouse and jail where sessions of the General Assembly were held from 1776 to 1814 and where John Cade was tried for treason in 1807. The Dutch founded New Bern as a trading post on Pamlico Island (now Dare Island) in 1628 and named it Nieuw Bergen after their ship "Nieuw Amsterdam". In 1736, King George II granted land to James Craven at what is now Cravensville, naming him governor of Albemarle County; Craven served as such until his death in 1753. In 1761,Craven's son Nicholas built a log cabin on what is now State Street near what is now Chapel Hill for government officials and their families. In 1771-1772, military officers stationed at Beaufort Bay used this location as their winter quarters while they awaited shipment from Fort Charlotte to Fort Johnson at Hillsboro Avenue and Johnston Street on Cape Royalty; during these months only men could stay there without being subject to searches by government officials or being arrested or deported if they violated rules against intermingling with Negroes or joining forces with them against France. In 1800–1801, when Hugh Lawson bought 10 acres (40 hectares) along present day Camden Road from John Hargrave for £5 per acre (€0.80 per square meter), he called it "Newbern". He moved his family thence in 1806 to this site when he became proprietor of Sir Hugh Lawson's land grants which included parts of Alamance County north of Dan River/Pamlico Sound between Elizabethtown Road on the east bank and Chapel Hill Pike on the west bank; some accounts give his year-round home address as 124 Beechwood Court although this probably refers to his farm house located across Beechwood Creek just south of present day Cedar Falls Drive which can still be seen today from State Street). On January 1st 1800 Hogarth married Jane Lowther Clarke here daughter of Reverend Mr Lowther who had come overland from England two years earlier with her father James Clarke who had been pastor at St Peters Anglican Church near Wilmington before moving downriver to new Tryon Parish in 1792 under Governor Dobbs; Jane Lowther may have been born there around October 1800 since she appears baptised November 3rd 1800 according to one source but her parents must have first arrived much later that year since Hogarth would not have been able to marry until December 1st 1800 either because Montague Laws prevented marriage between white males under 21 years old then and females turned 21 when she turned 26 – an age which appears even more restrictive back then than it does today –legalising female emancipation allayed fears among some about black women becoming self-sufficient economic actors]. Hogarth left Newbern about 1840 after marrying Catrina Snow White Davis whom he met aboard HMS Enterprise captained by Lt Col John Dando when she came ashore following a drift overboard off Devils Point Light on December 12th 1838 while serving aboard USS Constitution duringthe Seminole War; Davis died young less than two years later aged 24 leaving him widowed with six children plus four grandchildren living elsewhere including three daughters currently living in Jacksonville FL). In 1747, the British founded a town on the western coast of North Carolina. New Bern was named for Nicholas Bache, an Englishman who had settled in Carolina in 1693. The town grew rapidly and by 1800 it had a population of over 500 people. In 1819, New Bern became the state capital after Raleigh was burned down by Confederate forces. The city prospered until the early 20th century when pollution from industry and agriculture led to widespread impoverishment and social unrest. In 1960, New Bern joined the United States as an independent city.
