In 1847, Nathaniel Bowles purchased a rifle scope from a man named John Sutherlin in North Carolina. The scope was originally made by German optics manufacturer Friedrich Krieger and was first used on muzzleloader rifles. In 1859, the Bowles Rifle Scope Company was founded in New Bern, North Carolina by Nathaniel Bowles and his brother Samuel Bowles. The company manufactured rifles and shotguns with optical sights and began selling scopes in 1861. The company continued to produce rifles and shotguns until 1865 when it merged with another optic company, the American Optical Company. The American Optical Company produced scopes for both infantry firearms (such as those used by Confederate forces during the Civil War) as well as artillery pieces such as the Union Howitzer Cannon. The company also produced telescopes for astronomical use which were very popular in early 19th century America. Throughout its history, American Optical Company scoped many different types of firearms including rifles, shotguns, cannons, pistols, boat anchors etcetera. Nathaniel Bowles passed away in 1902 but his sons Sam & David continue to manufacture optics products including bows & arrows under their old name of NathanielBowles Optics Incorporated today.
