New Bern, North Carolina is a city of over 100,000 people located in the northwestern corner of the state of North Carolina. It was founded in 1728 by Captain John Smith as a small trading post on the Dobbs River. The area that now makes up New Bern was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived in large numbers during the 18th century. By 1800, much of what is now New Bern had been developed and named after General James Moore, one of the most influential Virginians during this time period. It lies on the Savannah River near Hilton Head Island and is part of the Savannah–Hilton Head metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now New Bern were Frenchmen who built Fort Duquesne in 1729. The British founded New Bern in 1735 as a trading post on the Elizabeth River. After independence from Great Britain was gained by America in 1776, Newbern became part of the newly formed Confederate States of America until 1861 when it joined Union forces during the American Civil War. On April 12, 1865, Newbern was incorporated as a city and remains an independent city to this day. One of the earliest industry centers in central North Carolina was Inland Navigation Company shipbuilding on Beaufort Point on James Bayou between Old Point Comfort and modern-day downtown Jacksonville Beach. Shipbuilders built boats for navigation up and down the Savannah River before WWI when there were no other ways to get goods to market quickly or reach markets farther inland than Mobile Bay or Charleston Harbor. With World War II came new shipping needs such as large cargo ships and submarines; these vessels required larger yards with more spacious accommodation than could be available at Inland Navigation Company sites along James Bayou or Beaufort Point (the later site being used by Rayonier). Inland Navigation Company's final production facility opened at its old site off US Highway 419 south of downtown Jacksonville Beach in 1951; it produced nine types of coastal fishing boats: catboat (later trawler), gaff-rigged oarsman boat/canoe (later powerboat), double-ended launch lugger/ schooner (later motorboat), long johns paddle steamer/ schooner (later propeller vessel), white PCL steamboats (later aluminum steamboats) – all built beneath riverbank using techniques pioneered by famed naval architect Captains John Cascarilla and Richard Mizeck – plus several unbuilt models including a small tugboat conversions known as "Catfish" which never got off the ground because their design would have been too different from any existing commercial vessels*.
