New Bern is a small town located in the U.S. state of North Carolina, and home to the New Bern Museum of Art. The museum was founded in 1915 by artist Helen Dickinson and her husband George Dickinson. In 1934, the couple donated their entire collection of art to the town as part of a larger donation from their estate. The Newbern Museum includes works by Hudson River School painters such as Edward Hopper and Vincent van Gogh, as well as American artists such as Andy Warhol and Jay Lynch. The museum also has a collection of Knives, which began with a single knife donated by Mrs. Dickinson in 1915. The first knife given away with an event in New Bern was an 8-inch Bowie Knife that belonged to Capt. John Cranch (1788-1864). Captain Cranch was born in Scotland, moved to America when he was just 7 years old, and became a slave at age 21 before becoming one of the founders of Fayetteville (now Roanoke Rapids) County in 1819. He served under General Robert Easley during the American Revolution, rose through the ranks to become captain general of militia after the war ended, and later served in Congress until his death in 1864 at the age of 62 years old. After Captain Cranch's death, his wife gave away two other knives - one 2 1/2 inches long and made out of deer antler and bone;the other is 3 inches long made from hickory wood and brass hardware - with each gift totaling $10 ($100 back then). In 1916, Mrs. Dickinson organized a local bake sale to raise money for the new Newbern Museumof Art which she had started Construction on adjacent to her home on High Street near where present day First Baptist Church stands today! proceeds from this bake sale went towards funding for both museums! In 1935 Mrs..Dickinson passed away leaving behind her entire collection including over 100 knives including 10+ Bowie Knives! In 1911, Newbern became a city under Mayor James Fergusson with significant growth following incorporation into Raleigh County by General Order No. 104 dated October 15, 1918 which granted all citizens full rights to vote and hold public office without having to pay taxes or fees until such time as their citizenship check arrived from Raleigh County - an act which helped increase overall civic engagement among residents and contributed significantly to downtown development throughout much of that decade). Although not without controversy – particularly around gentrification – Downtown New Bern has seen increased tourism activity over recent years as a result of its unique setting and historical significance among North Carolinians (and tourists from around the world).
