It became a city on July 1, 1852. New Bern is the county seat of Gaston County. The population of the City of New Bern was 24,710 as of 2010. The first European settler in what is now Gaston County was Captain John Smith who landed at Cape Fear River on November 25th 1607. He named the area after his home town of Newburgh in Scotland - he had been preceded there by other Englishmen such as Sir Walter Raleigh and Admiral William Cecil who had explored North America since 1589-91 when Spain discovered that the landmass between Mexico and Brazil was connected to Asia. In 1784 General James Fayette and Colonel John White sailed from Portsmouth, England with two hundred men for what would become known as "the Great Migration". They were granted permission by the British government to establish a permanent military post within present day Gaston County - it would be called Fort Charlotte - but they only stayed for a year before moving on to found new settlements near present day Durhamtown which they renamed "Newbern." On Wednesday evening October 14th 1785 one thousand nine hundred fifty-two citizens from all over North Carolina met at Durhamtown under the leadership of Speaker John Strickland to form what would quickly become known as "the First National Legislature" which consisted of delegates elected by popular vote from each county within Gaston County...A committee composed of Mr Knoppers (owner/operator), Dr Sprague (pioneer doctor), Rev Hargrave (a Congregationalist minister), Wm Rice (fellow lawyer), Jno Cline (founder/editor) went into full session at 2 P M next morning October 15th with adjournment until eleven o'clock A M tomorrow morning because an important event had arrived concerning our province called Pontotoc...The result thereof being read this forenoon before us gentlemen present when we proceeded thro' objections offeredby some Members we concurred therein & made proclamation accordingly promising ourselves To consider all Questions proposed but reserving till tomorrow morning how We shall determine upon them...An address having been delivered by Mr Knopper touching our Province's Loyalty thereto I certify that we concurred therein & took up their several propositions for consideration without any interruption or delay during which time We did not hear any thing amiss respecting Our happy Government giving due weight To Every Member's Opinion hereinbefore expressed By order OF THE FIRST National Legislature As settlers moved into current-day Gaston County, they began property ownership and development patterns similar to those seen today including naming their settlements after places in England or Scotland where their families may have come from such as Newcastle upon Tyne or Edinburgh. The first courthouse in town was built in 1802 and soon thereafter public meetings were held to discuss laws and regulations governing local affairs like land usage etcetera. On December 8th 1802 voters registered 583 people living within Present Day Gaston County limits – including 137 foreigners! This number increased rapidly over the following years with many more immigrants coming through Ellis Island seeking legal status among other things. In 1809 president George Washington issued an executive order establishing slavery within free states - it wasn’t fully implemented until 1865 when Ohio finally ceded its portion of West Virginia to Virginia due to political pressure brought about by slaveholders inside that state). The growth rate slowed down significantly around this time due largely to increasing costs associated with expanding infrastructure necessary for growing populations along with competition from neighboring counties whose residents enjoyed lower taxes and better infrastructure conditions resulting in little interaction between newcomers and natives outside Town Hall meetings! By 1830 majority white farming families were established throughout most of contemporary New Bern while enslaved African Americans continued working mainly on plantations across central South Carolina providing cottonseed oil products essential for southern plantation economies Although abolitionism grew increasingly popular throughout much of antebellum North Carolina these practices remained unchanged well into Reconstruction days although some gradual changes occurred beginning in 1865 under newly appointed governor David S Kimbrough

New Bern was founded by English colonists in 1699 as a post office on the Darlington River. The first store opened in 1701 and the first school in 1702. In 1827, Newbern became part of what is now South Carolina when that state seceded from the United States. The town was renamed for King George Washington on July 12, 1827. The town's first public meeting was held on November 3, 1828 and it incorporated as a city on February 14th of that year. On December 8th of that year, Mayor John French announced that he would not seek reelection and recommended to the City Council that they name their new city New Bern instead since this was where he had been born and raised. After much discussion it was decided to name their new city after General James Gadsden who had helped lead American forces during the War for Independence
