The town was founded in 1784 by British General John Forbes and became an important military post during the Revolutionary War. In 1907 General Motors purchased Lever Brothers Cotton Mill from James Fenton and renovated it into one of the largest GM plants in America at that time. This mill ceased operations in 1957 but left behind a legacy of Americana which continues to be enjoyed by locals and visitors today. In recent years much effort has been made to revive downtown Newbern as an iconic destination for arts and culture; this has included renovations to both the old Lever Brothers Cotton Mill building as well as several other historic buildings within walking distance of downtown including First Baptist Church (founded 1814) and Constitution Hall (built 1796).
