Despite being opposed by many business owners throughout their history—including some who still own most of what remains today—the decision ultimately paid off when Main Street became one of the busiest shopping streets in town during peak tourist season months. Today Newbern is an important cultural center for eastern North Carolina due to its rich history as well as its Georgian Revival architecture dating back to 1835–36 when wealthy Scots-Irish families settled here after migrating from Ulster County in Ireland
