New Bern is a town in Iredell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham–Fayetteville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1736 by English colonists as NewBern Plantation on what is now known as Moore's Creek. The name "Newbern" was given to it by Governor John Petty after he and his men visited the area in 1737. In 1819, New Bern became an incorporated town with a population of 2,200 people. New Bern is located at (35.766667, -79.269444). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,515 people, 439 households, and 317 families residing in the town. The population density was 821.5 people per square mile (291.1/km²). New Bern was established in 1734 as a town in what is now Burlington County, North Carolina. In 1820, the town became an incorporated city and it has since grown to be one of the most populous cities in the state. The city is known for its rich history and culture, which can be seen in the many landmark buildings and attractions that remain from its past. Some of the earliest settlers in New Bern were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1636. The city was founded on a mound that had been used as a trading post by these settlers. It wasn’t until 1734 that New Bern became an official town within Burlington County. The first mayor of Newbern was John Denton, who served from 1734-1738. In 1820, Newbern became an incorporated city under provisions of the North Carolina Constitution. This meant that it had full governing power over its own affairs and could make decisions without depending on county or state approval. The primary industries of New Bern during this time were agriculture and fishing. However, there were also some major businesses such as Jardine Brothers store which was started by James Jardine in 1857 and remains one of the largest stores in the city today. During World War II, much effort went into defeating Nazi Germany with help from American troops stationed here including 1st Lt./John Waddell who led Operation Neptune’s Spear which successfully destroyed six German submarines offshore atoll on October 12th 1944
New Bern was founded in 1734 by Perquimans as a small town on the banks of the Anastasia River. The town grew rapidly, and by 1759 it had become a major trading center on the Pamlico Sound. By 1819 New Bern had established itself as a city, and it continued to grow into its current dimensions during the late 19th century.
