The population of New Bern exploded from 1,000 to 16,000 during World War II as the city grew into an international center for munitions production. By 1990, however, cotton production had become the dominant activity and new buildings were no longer being erected as schools or businesses replaced older ones that were destroyed by fire or storm damage. In recent years much attention has been paid topreserving downtown New Bern which includes many buildings dating back to its early days including Richardson's Mill and Lumberton Female High School which are both on the National Register of Historic Places
