Mount Holly is a town in Robeson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,839 at the 2010 census. Founded in 1792 by Welsh colonists as a trading post on the Great Smoky Mountains, Mount Holly became an independent city in 1876. It has since regained its status as a small town and the seat of government for Robeson County. The local paper mill closed in 2007 but remnants of the mill remain today. The first permanent settler in what is now Mount Holly was John Gwynn who founded what is now called Gwynnstown on November 10, 1792 and named it after himself and his father-in-law (Hugh Gwynn). From this location he traded goods with the Cherokee Indians. In 1836, George Catlett organized a group of white men to attack Indian villages near present day mount Holly because they thought that British traders were taking advantage of the native people without giving them proper treatment. This event is known as “The Catlett Expedition” because General James Catlett led the expedition which resulted in three dead and many injuries among the American troops. In 1876, Mount Holly became an independent city when it was granted its own charter from Robeson County officials. On December 5th of that year, Mayor John Witherspoon inaugural speech said "This City will be one day felt by all who know it – not only by those living within its limits but also by those who have intercourse with all parts of our great commonwealth." In 1937, during World War II Mount Holly's airfield served as a staging ground for Allied bombers during Operation Torch which ended on October 20th that year just north of town limits
