Mount Holly is a small town in Rowan County, North Carolina, United States. It was founded by white men in 1776 and became an incorporated town in 1879. The community was named after the Palmetto trees that grow near the town's core. Mount Holly has a history of astronomy and its first astronomer, Dr. David Bushnell, was honored with a star on the American Astronomical Society's Hall of Fame in 1987.

Mount Holly is a small town in North Carolina, located on the border of Union and Moore counties. The population was 2,614 as of 2010. Mount Holly has a history dating back to 1811 when it was established as an agricultural community by Scotsmen under the name of "Hollyhock." The name Mount Holly was first applied to the town in 1868 by General John C. Breckinridge, who also named nearby Royster for his father-in-law, Reverend Samuel Royster. The early residents were mostly German immigrants who had come to work on plantations in South Carolina. When the Civil War began, many of these Germans joined Confederate forces and some even served in high positions within the Confederacy. However, most of these men eventually returned home after the war ended and resumed their lives in their native Germany. However, during Reconstruction following the Civil War, many African Americans began moving into North Carolina from southern states such as Virginia and Mississippi. These new arrivals quickly assimilated into white society and soon discovered that they could not easily obtain jobs or housing because they were not white enough. This situation led to what is known locally as "the integration problem" which continued until well into the 20th century. In 1865, Methodist Episcopal Church founder Revocation Witherspoon moved from Tennessee to Mount Holly with his wife Lucy to begin missionary work among settlers hereabouts (Witherspoon's original plan was to establish a mission station near Knoxville). In 1867 Revocation built himself a cabin at present day East High School which he used as his headquarters for much of his missionary work among Methodists throughout eastern North Carolina; he also founded several other churches hereabouts before his death in 1902).

For example, many people believed that scopes were unable to accurately see things beyond about 100 miles away! This belief led to some very unfortunate consequences such as people being misled into investing in expensive astronomical equipment only to find out later that it was not really worth their while! However, overall, scopes continued to play an important role in science until after World War II when they became much less common again because of advances in technology
