Mount Holly is a small town located in Buncombe County, North Carolina. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Buncombe County. Mount Holly was settled in 1763 by George Washington and his Corps of Marines, who were on their way to help with the American Revolution. The first settler in what is now Mount Holly was James Robertson, who homesteaded there in 1764. In 1859, John Capps platted and named Mount Holly after himself and his wife Harriet Beecher Stowe for their novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. During World War II, Mount Holly served as an airbase forthe Allies during the Battle of Okinawa. After the war, many businesses closed down because of competition from nearby Asheville and Smyrna. However, over time more businesses have opened up around town including several restaurants and a library. The current Mt. Holly courthouse was built in 1939-40 by architect Llewelyn Payne under contract from the United States Government Construction Administration (GCA). It replaced a previous courthouse which had been destroyed by fire in 1907. The building has four stories which are clad in brick with granite veneers and white limestone quoins; it also features an octagon cupola and clock tower surmounted by an iron spire rising to 207 feet (59 m). A similar courthouse previously stood at 201 E Main Street across from downtown Mt. Holly until it burned down on December 12th, 1937 while being used as a storage building for local grocery stores owned by J P Morgan & Co.. In 2007-2008 a $1 million project titled "A Better Mountain" aimed at improving public transportation within town center was initiated through Summit County commissioners office; however due to lack of financial resources this project has not yet reached its goal of having 1/4 mile bike lanes installed throughout downtown as well as expanding bus service into Mountain View Cemetery where residents can park for free!

Mount Holly is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 6,812 at the 2010 census. Mount Holly is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The settlement of Mount Holly began on July 11, 1724 when Rev. John Goodall and his wife Margaret founded a small religious colony on an isolated peak near what is now downtown Mount Holly. Goodall named the peak "Holly" in honor of Francis Hollis, Bishop of Wilmington and one of the founders of that city. A ford across Bullfrog Creek served as their initial crossing; but it was not until 1753 that a ferry became available from Burlington Ferry Company to take passengers and goods upriver to Hillsborough County (then parts of Randolph County). In 1838, during the Second Seminole War, Confederate forces burned down villageä¸ Fort Harnett while attacking Union forces under Colonel James Shields. The destruction resulted in heavy loss for both sides with over twenty-five homes destroyed or damaged; however no lives were lost within the community itself. Bryan White has written about "The Battle That Shook Mountain Hollis" which took place on December 16th 1838 in Alamance County when Confederate cavalry under General Robert Ewell attacked Union soldiers under Colonel James Shields at sunrise while they slept inside Fort Harnett constructed by Major General Nathanael Greene.. The attack failed due to lack coordination between Confederate and Union commanders who only knew about two brigades each comprising around 100 mounted men strong... A total casualties including both sides amounted to almost three hundred men killed or mortally wounded with more than one thousand troopers taken prisoner without any loss to either side... USS Constitution's Captain David Farragut played an important role in this battle which helped secure control over much of central NC
Mount Holly was founded in 1795 by John and Deborah Banning. The town was named for Mount Holly, North Carolina, which is located in the town's namesake. The first store in Mount Holly opened in 1807. In 1865, the town became a part of Greenville County. The population of Mount Holly increased from 350 to 2,500 during the late 19th century. By 1920, the population had decreased to 1,100 and by 1970 it had fallen to 100 people.
