Mount Holly is a small town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Mount Holly was Captain John Smith on October 14, 1735 when he and his men explored the area for potential trade routes. He named it "Hollyhock" after a local tree which he found growing near his encampment. By 1738, settlements had been established around what is now Mount Holly. On February 25, 1740, Governor Tryon ordered the erection of a post office at Mount Holly as part of plans for connecting different parts of North Carolina through postal service. The cornerstone for the first Post Office was laid on July 5th by General James Johnston with Reverend Samuel Parrish officiating as deacon. That same year saw another milestone when Andrew Johnson became the first U.S. President to travel to North Carolina while in office and deliver an address at Duke University in Raleigh before leaving on March 3rd for Williamsburg Virginia where he took up residence that evening.. Mount Holly experienced rapid growth following Reconstruction following the Civil War thanks in large part to investments by two businessmen – Wm Hargrave and Gouverneur Morris – who were instrumental in creating new industries including cotton ginning and logging in what would become known as "The Hill Country". There have also been efforts focused upon education with several churches opening up schools (e.g., Presbyterian Episcopal Church School), attracted not only students but also their parents who often commute into Charlotte or Durham for work or school; furthermore there are now numerous youth programs available throughout Mount Holly making it one OF THE most active rural communities within greater Charlotte region!

In 1831-32 Governor Thomas Pinckney closed all navigation on the Yadkin River because of yellow fever epidemics that were sweeping through North Carolina at that time. As a result, many people left for new opportunities in Georgia and Tennessee. A few families continued to live in Mount Holly until 1840 when it became an unincorporated post office with ZIP code 27461
