Mount Holly is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 4,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville– Hendersonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Mount Holly was James Caldwell in 1768. He and his wife named their land "Mount Holly." By 1800, most of Gaston County had been claimed by South Carolina and Mount Holly lay within that colony's boundaries. In 1801, the Union Army under General Andrew Jackson crossed the mountains into North Carolina to suppress a slave insurrection; Caldwell's family fled to Mount Holly and farm there until they were driven out by retreating Confederate forces in 1865. The original courthouse building still stands today as part of the town hall complex which also includes a recreation department and library. A post office opened for Mount Holly on September 15, 1811, and remained open until it was discontinued on January 6, 1907. In 1864-1865 during Union occupation of North Carolina local resident John Boggs organized several hundred white farmers who raised corn for food purposes on private land west of town (now known as East Allis). This new crop allowed residents to avoid combat with the Ulysses S Grant army campaigning through Gaston County from April 1862 to December 1865; these self-sufficient farmers are generally considered to have saved mount holly from total destruction during this time period. Mount Holly is a town in McDowell County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white settler in Mount Holly was Samuel Ashe, who arrived in 1768 and erected a cabin on the present site of Mount Holly proper. He named his community for his home town in England. Ashe's wife, Eunice (Porter), also came to America with him and settled in what is now Mount Holly Township. They had two children: Samuel Jr., who became an independent farmer and businessman; and Eleanor, who married John McCarty and became one of the most noted women of her day. In 1812, when war broke out between the United States and Great Britain over the status of American Samoa, many textile workers from North Carolina crossed the ocean to join forces with their southern brethren in support of America. A small detachment from Mount Holly's militia joined General Andrew Jackson's army as it marched through Tennessee into Alabama to attack Spanish Fort San Marcos guarding Mobile Bay; but soon returned home after being relieved byGeneral Ulysses S Grant at Lookout Mountain on July 12th 1812 without losing any men or materiel. On December 2nd 1800 Elias Boudinot organized a small group of patriotic settlers from New York City along with two families from Virginia under leadership of Captains Nicholas Biddle (or Bedloe) and John Stevens (or Tryon). Their goal was to establish a new settlement on land that lay east-southeast of what is now Roanoke Rapids within sight of Charleston harbor so that those interested could be connected to agricultural production there while still having access to important shipping channels via Roanoke River crossings which they could defend if necessary They named their new community "Mount Laurel" after Queen Elizabeth II's official residence at Windsor Castle where they were based before departing for America on February 14th 1800 SSB* (*This may be due to confusion caused by conflicting sources which spell Mount Laurel as "Mt Laurel".
