Mount Holly is a small town in Onslow County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,419 at the 2010 census. The Mount Holly Baptist Church and School are located in the town. The first permanent settler in what is now Mount Holly was James Robertson who built a cabin on the mountain on February 1, 1776. He named his property "Mount Holly" after his home country of Scotland. Over time, other settlers followed suit and the name became known throughout Onslow County as "The Town on the Hill." In 1814, Samuel Underwood settled near present day Mount Holly and began to cultivate some land around his cabin which he named "Underwood's Fork." In 1832 John Coyle settled approximately one mile east of present day Mount Holly and started farming with his family. By 1840 there were around 20 families living in various parts of Onslow County within 5 miles of each other - including Mount Holly! In 1842 an act was passed by the General Assembly of North Carolina entitled an act for erecting a schoolhouse in every township within this state for the instruction of children between 6 years old and 16 years old. This act called for $1,000 be set aside for this purpose and directed that “a grant of land should be made to each trusteeship [school board] annually” atrociously failed to materialize over many years despite repeated requests from trusteeships all across Onslow County! Finally on October 12th 1861 a group of citizens led by Reverend Jno Bledsoe petitioned Governor Tryon to establish a school board in Mount Holly specifically for educational purposes! Unfortunately this request too fell on deaf ears due to political correctness; however we can still see evidence of Mr. Bledsoe’s efforts today through artifacts such as pioneer iron tools donated by him to Southern Methodist University’s School Library Collection
In 1811, Mount Holly was founded by Reverend John Fenton and his wife, Sarah. The town prospered because of its location on the green Tobacco Road and its close proximity to other tobacco-growing towns in the state. In 1824, Mount Holly became the capital of North Carolina.
