Aftermath of the war damaged much property in town including shops, churches, homes and businesses that had been built during Reconstruction years following the end of slavery in America. During World War II most residents left for military service or other reasons but some remained to help rebuild post-war society after Japan's bombing campaign across Southeast Asia killed more than fifty thousand people within five months in 1945 alone; this event also prompted widespread criticism throughout America about government failure to take action against such indiscriminate warfare which had caused so much death and destruction around the world since World War II began four decades earlier!
