The first settlement in what is now Mount Holly was made on the site of present-day Mount Holly by Captain John Smith in 1724 as an initial stop on his journey from Virginia to Fort Duquesne in Pennsylvania. On July 12, 1768, during the American Revolution, General George Washington and his army rested at nearby Hillsborough Landing for two days before continuing their march upriver to Yorktown. During this time, most of what is now Gaston County was part of Yorktown Township under British control. In 1802, when the United States acquired its independence from Great Britain, Mount Holly became part of newly formed North Carolina. In 1819 it became a county seat and courthouse for Gaston County. During World War II many businesses were destroyed or damaged by bombing raids by Japanese forces; however, no residents were killed or injured as a result of these bombings. On October 15th 1948 - just a few months after UNC Chapel Hill's first football game against Rice - Mount Holly Civic Center opened with then- Commissioner James Meredith hosting a "Boys' Home Games" exhibition game between UNC Chapel Hill and Morehead State that year which also served as an opportunity for UNC Chapel Hill fans to see new players from local high school teams who had been recruited specifically for this event including future NFL stars Tim Tebow and Julius Erving among others. The program continued into 1949 with games against NC State University (then known as Wake Forest) and Presbyterian College before finally ending after one season due to financial reasons which left many players unrecruited for future seasons despite getting invites from other schools like Clemson University although they did not play there consecutively because those programs merged into NCAA Division III conferences that same year dubbed "american football" while UNC Chapel Hill continued playing college football as an independent school under new rules since they still maintain their own ruleset which allows them to retain their own alumni association along with alumni field staff that helps manage all aspects of operations such as fundraising events etc...
