There is no one definitive history of gun slings in Mount Holly, North Carolina. However, there are a number of stories and references to the practice dating back to before the Revolutionary War. One story relates to a man named John Griggs who settled in the area in 1775. He was often armed with a rifle and sling as he hunted animals near his home. One day, while hunting deer, he decided to take aim at one from a distance. His sling missed its target by inches and caused him some damage (Griggs was known for being very accurate with his weapons). In response, he developed a custom-built rifle using parts salvaged from other guns that he had killed earlier in the hunt. This Rifle became known as the "Sling Gun." The term "gun slings" eventually came to refer specifically to this type of weapon.
Mount Holly is a small town in the state of North Carolina, located about 30 miles northwest of Raleigh. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buncombe County government. The land around Mount Holly was first occupied by the Cherokee people and then by English settlers in the 17th century. In 1814, Mount Holly was formally incorporated as a town and became one of the original 100 United States towns. The name comes from Hollysuckle (a type of camellia), which grows abundantly on nearby hills. In 1955, Mount Holly began to be named for General James Longstreet, who fought in both World War I and World War II as a general commanding U.S.-led forces in Europe and Asia. He later served as president of UNC Chapel Hill. In that year, General Longstreet's widow donated $10,000 to make Mount Holly an educational institution called James Longstreet College Foundation Incorporated). Today, Mount Holly is home to two colleges: James LongstreEThodist Community College and Bryn Mawr University (formerly Bryn Mawr Institute). Mount Holly has a rich history dating back to when it was first settled by Europeans in the late 17th century. One early settler was John Crouchwood who arrived with his family in 1692 during what is now known as The Great Migration from England. Over time more people migrated to Mount Holly including many slaves who were taken from Africa during the American Revolution and transported across America on ships called "The Mayflower." Most notably, three signers of The Declaration of Independence - Thomas Jefferson, George Washington and Ethan Allen - lived very close by in Charlotte while they were working on drafting the document. Partly because of this proximity some people refer to MtHolly as "Jefferson's Key" or "Ethan Allen's Hole." There are also several historical buildings located within walking distance of MtHolly such as First Presbyterian Church which dates back to1709 and Burlington County Courthouse which opened in 1838AD when Buncombe County was created out of parts of Davidson County.(Buncombe Courthouse Annex)
