Mount Holly is a small town located in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, approximately 20 miles north-northwest of Charlotte. Mount Holly is a town in Swain County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,933 at the 2010 census. Mount Holly is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg area. It is located on the edge of the Pisgah Mountains and it takes its name from George Washington's home in nearby Fredericksburg. The first Europeans to visit Mount Holly were two Dutchmen, Hendrick Hudson and Jan van der Valk, who passed through in 1664. A French trader named Boudreau also visited in 1665 but no permanent settlement resulted from his presence. In 1712 a group of thirteen men arrived by shipwreck off the coast of North Carolina and founded what became known as New Bern; they established a trading post there and called themselves "Holland's Colony." In 1737 an act was passed by the General Assembly endorsing an application for land from Daniel Boone; this Act granted four thousand acres (1/2 mile) to Boone as well as $5 per acre ($50 worth of goods at that time) in annual revenue to be paid over a period of ten years to those who resided within easy travel distance of his new seat of government—now known as Charlotte—on mountain slopes overlooking Wilmington Harbor on LakeNC. Mount Holly began development almost immediately after Boone's grant came through – early settlers built log homes with long narrow front porch widths for ease of access into their gardens or out onto their property for farming or hunting games. By 1800 most citizens were engaged in agriculture with some raising livestock; however there were still few houses except for one or two accompanying slaves each year until after 1820 when white people began moving into town seeking employment opportunities during Reconstruction which ended with passage of The Civil Rights Act voting rights for African Americans beginning on January 1st, 1870 effectively ending slavery throughout much of the American South including Mount Holly After World War II many businesses closed due to rising prices associated with technology while other businesses like lumberyards thrived because demand remained high for wood products despite increases seen elsewhere around the country caused by war-time production shortages

It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Mount Holly was Captain John Smith on October 26, 1607 when he and his men explored the area. In 1735, surveyor James Dobson built a cabin here for himself and his family. From this cabin, Dobson surveyed much of what is now Rutherford County. In 1814, General David Johnston's army marched through Mount Holly on their way to battle against Robert E. Lee in Virginia. A cannonball hit Dobson's house killing him and his wife Nancy (née Jennings). Their son Samuel also died from the injury sustained at that battle nine days later on October 13th1814 while serving under Johnston in North Carolina with Company I New York Volunteers Infantry Regiment commanded by Colonel Troup during the Battle of Monmouth Court House which resulted in a Union victory over Confederate forces under General Johnston
The first permanent European settlers in North Carolina were Englishmen who arrived in 1724. In 1778, the British colony of North Carolina was created from parts of Virginia and Georgia. The British government decided that the new state should be named for George Washington, the first United States president.
