Mount Holly is a small town in North Carolina, located about 20 miles south of Charlotte. The population was 5,462 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Burlington, NC micropolitan area. The town was founded in 1792 by two men from South Carolina named John and James Robertson. They came up the Holm River to what is now Mount Holly because they thought it would be a good place to grow crops and build a sawmill. The first store opened in 1794, and within five years the town had a school, hotel, doctor's office and several churches. Mount Holly has always been an agricultural center with many businesses providing products such as apples, cornbread and chicken feed. But it also became famous for its hams and bacon which are still popular today. The town also became known as "The Best Place In The World To Raise Ham." In 1811, surveyors found that there were only three houses left in Mount Holly proper and that most of the land around it had been bought by farmers for pasture or farming purposes. So the townspeople decided to move into new buildings which they built on high ground just east of downtown. This location helped make Mount Holly one of the most thriving towns in Randolph County during this time period because it could easily get food supplies from nearby Wilmington or Raleigh-Durham without having to go too far away! But things changed when war started in 1861 and many farms were destroyed along with their families! Then things got really bad when Sherman's army burned down all but one brick building in Mount Holly on April 12th 1865! That destroyed any hope that something might be done about using mount HOlly land for military purposes! As a result of this tragedy, people turned their backs on mount HOlly altogether and it declined rapidly over the next few decades until only a few scattered homes remain today...one being used as apartments!).

However, these mills closed during World War II and although there has been occasional commercial activity since then, Mount Holly has remained an agricultural center with few major industry changes over the last 100 years.
Mount Holly was founded in 1753 by Englishmen named John and Mary Mount. The town grew around a small mill, now known as the Mount Holly Village Museum. The first white male settler arrived in 1776, and the town became a post office in 1800. In 1868, Mount Holly began to be called "Nashville" because of its proximity to Nashville, Tennessee. After the death of Confederate general Robert E. Lee, Nashvile renamed itself for him in 1919.
