Mount Holly is a small town in Alamance County, North Carolina. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Mount Holly was Elias Howe, who purchased land from the Powhatan Confederacy in 1772. He built his house on present-day Cherry Hill Road in 1773 and named it Mount Holly after his home country of Hollis, New Hampshire. In 1827, a group of Scotch-Irish farmers founded an agricultural college at Mount Holly and named it Randolph College after James Randolph, then United States Senator from Virginia. Randolph College closed its doors in 1915 but reopened as Mount Holly Community College in 1933. In 1847, John Newton moved to Mount Holly from Asheboro and started a grocery store on Main Street which became known as Newton's Drug Store. The townspeople supported him financially until he died at age 93 years old in 1888 due to complications from diabetes mellitus caused by exposure to arsenic gas during World War I; however, many items still remain inside the building which still stands today (now used as a library). Mount Holly experienced some significant growth following World War II when large amounts of new housing were built throughout Alamance County for soldiers stationed outside of Fort Bragg and nearby Camp Gordon. Many businesses located within walking distance of Soldier Field such as Jiffy Lube Auto Service relocated to new facilities within walking distance of the military base or miles away on surrounding rural roadsides where they continue to operate to this day under different names such as "Winegarde" or "Bevins Hardware." It wasn't until 1970 that Interstate 95 bypassed town entirely opening up much more space for development with all existing businesses moving out into neighborhoods near I-95 while larger businesses along routes I-95/85 continued to thrive within walking distance only changing their name once or twice (Merrill Lynch becoming Merrill Place Mall). Today remnants of original architecture can be seen everywhere including several storefronts left standing between I-95 lanes providing ample opportunity for creative destruction! Today mount holly has regained most if not all its lost population since deindustrialization began occurring throughout the early 21st century through emigration and suburban migration mainly those searching for cheaper prices without any commitment towards community based values
