Mount Holly is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,102 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Alamance County. The first permanent English settlement in what is now Alamance County was in Mount Holly Township on the Yadkin River about 1765. A wharf and other buildings were built there by traders to store their goods during the French and Indian War (1754-1763). [1] The townsite was laid out by Major James Robertson of Scots Rite Freemasonry who arrived in 1769 from Ireland with his brother David Robertson. The two men named Mount Holly after George Washington's home state of Virginia where they had been born and raised. In 1775, when General Nathanael Greene's army moved through the area on its way to Battle of Saratoga, they stopped at Mount Holly for lunchtime before continuing on their campaign against British forces northeast of Philadelphia. [2] In 1807, Mount Holly became part of Henderson County when that county was organized from parts of Johnston, Moore and Cleveland Counties. In 1809 Hendersonville was also created within Henderson County; it replaced present-day Burlington as the county seat until 1825 when that city's incorporation made it an independent municipality under town law control. Effective January 1st 1911 Burlington again became the county seat with Mount Holly becoming an unincorporated community within Alamance County.[3] As Hendersonville grew busier than Burlington it began to annex more land westward into Alamance COUNTY while Burlington retained most of its original acres within limits set by Act No 625 approved February 15th 1865 creating Precincts 2&3 Forumber 8 miles W side Of Saluda Lake & east thereof throghout Range Creek watershed including all tracts lying southwesterly excepting a tract lying northerly along Range creek watershed known as Hornets Nest which had been annexed by Burlington prior to 1921 as part of its annexation plan for western portions annexed since creation of Caldwell Parish including those lands.] It should be noted that this act did not include any lands currently located within present day Alamance or Buncombe Counties but rather contiguous areas bounded northerly on I-40 between Charlotte and Durham counties including much today's eastern portion of Holmdel township adjacent to I-40/I-285
