In 1911, Mount Holly residents voted to become the first city in North Carolina to institute a concealed carry law. The measure allowed citizens with permits to carry handguns in public without having to are registered with the police department. The law was amended in 1934 and again in 1938, but it remained an unenforced ordinance. In 1970, City Council decided that handgun possession within city limits was an individual right and not a municipal responsibility. As a result, all handgun-carrying citizens were required to have a permit from the city government or face criminal prosecution. The repeal of the city’s concealed carry ordinance two years later led to increased gun violence in Mount Holly. On November 5, 1974, four people were shot and killed at Liberty Market while shoppers were eating lunch. At that time, handguns still weren’t allowed on premise at the market so the shootings didn’t trigger any public response until much more recently when they became an everyday occurrence on a daily basis. The Gun Owners of America (GOA) has been active in mount holly since its inception as early as 1969 when 410 individuals met at Baptist Church for an organizational meeting about firearms rights and Second Amendment issues surrounding local elections being held that year. GOA leaders would continue working hard during these early days despite occasional confrontations with state troopers who would harass them for exercising their constitutional right to bear arms outside of polling places

Mount Holly is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,564 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Alamance County and a part of the Elizabeth City–Fayetteville metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1792 by settlers from Pennsylvania who were looking for land to settle after the American Revolution. The original Mount Holly Baptist Church was built in 1793 on what is now Second Street. In 1814, Rev. Samuel Parkhurst purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) of land east of Mount Holly and established what became known as Parkhurstown Township. He named his township after himself, but it eventually came to be called Mount Holly because of its elevation above other townships in Alamance County. In 1827, following the creation of Cumberland County, Mount Holly became part of that county; however, it remained an independent municipality until 1889 when it merged with Elizabeth City to form theElizabeth City–Fayetteville metropolitan area. The first post office at Mount Holly was established in 1792; it served as both a dropoff point for travelers coming into and leaving Alamance County and also as a center for trade with those located near Chapel Hill and Wadesboro. By 1800, there were about 30 residents living in Mount Holly proper and 10 residents who lived off-site in Parkhurstown Township; all told, only 2 percent of the population resided within 1 mile (1 kilometer) of any commercial or residential center. During Reconstruction period (1865-1877), which followed Reconstructionist policies across most southern US states following the American Civil War, Mount Holly worked closely with Elizabeth City to help rebuild their economies and regain some control over their own destiny outside Confederate hands. For example, on February 20 1865 – just one week before Union troops captured Petersburg – Mayor Lewis Gillett organized a procession through downtown Elizabeth City urging citizens to rise up against Confederate Genonel Robert Ewell's siege of that city; Gillett's call for defiance helped set stage for later events such as local elections held March 12 which Hamas won handily despite military efforts by Union forces loyal to President Abraham Lincoln
Mount Holly was a small mountain located in North Carolina. The mountain is thought to have been named for Mount Holly, Virginia, where the first white settlers settled.
