Mount Holly was founded in 1792 and post office began operation in 1794. The name "Mount Holly" comes from two original settlers, Nicholas Hill and James Jackson. In 1848, Mount Holly became the seat of government for Robeson County when it was created from parts of Johnston and Union counties. The first permanent settler in what would become Mount Holly was Nicholas Hill who arrived from England with his family in 1792. He started a sawmill and gristmill near present day Springdale Road and Cherry Blossom Lane in what is now northeast portion of town. From this millhill NicholasHill developed a reputation as one of the best farmers in South Carolina due to his innovation withmanaged tillage practices that yielded high crops per acre on fertile soil. James Jackson also arrived soon afterNicholasHill's arrival and established himself along Cherry Blossom Lane as a trader/farmer/blacksmith before moving to what would become northwest corner of town where he built an old plantation named Brownsville (now known as Chatham). In 1801 JamesJackson married Anna Maria McIntosh which led to him acquiring additional land including much of northeastern Robeson County including present day Mount Holly east of Cherry Blossom Lane - which he called McIntosh Plantation because his wife had acquired it while serving as mistress to Sir John Johnson (1st Viscount Northumberland). Mount Holly was founded by English colonists in 1719 as a hunting and fishing community on an isolated promontory overlooking Charlotte Harbor. In 1838, Mount Holly became a seat of government for Chatham County and remains its only municipality today. The town's history can be traced back to its founding as part of the British colony of North Carolina in 1719. Settlers arrived in large numbers during the early eighteenth century, when land grants were made available for settlement west of Charlotte Harbor. By 1729, most of what is now Mount Holly had been acquired and development began: additional grants were given over time to more people, including Germans and Scots-Irish immigrants from Ireland who brought their livestock and crops with them to new homes in upstate New York. The first permanent settler in Mount Holly was George Washington (1724–97), who purchased land east of Chathamboro from Jonathan Harris for £200 per acre (equivalent to $10 million current value). Washington named his holdings "Mount Vernon" after his personal home at Virginia's capital Richmond; he also built a house here that is still standing today—the first major structure erected within what would becomeMount Holly Township. With Washingtons help, settlers developed agriculture into a viable business venture; tobacco was one crop grown extensively here until it replaced rice as America's most common food source during the Revolutionary War era (and continues to be so today). In 1792, after years of effort by local officials led by Nathaniel Bacon (1733–1806), mount holly township was organized into two districts: one centered around downtown Chathamboro while another included much rural territory stretching from modern day Hawkinsville downriver to Elizabeth City Counties subsequently known as Wake Forest County.
