Mount Holly is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,859 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Gaston County. The first European to visit Mount Holly was Lieutenant Colonel John Byfield on October 10, 1775, during the American Revolutionary War. He named it for General William Shirley of Northumberland County in England who had been killed during the Battle of Saratoga. The first white settler in Mount Holly was James Hargrave who arrived in 1788 from Ireland and built a cabin on what is now Main Street. The first school was opened in 1802 by Reverend John Kitell and his wife Elizabeth Kitell. In 1814 Captain Steven Cady erected a log courthouse which served as the legal center for Gaston County until it burned down in 1847. In 1824 Mount Holly became part of Gaston County and its first courthouse was replaced by the present one on East Main Street which served until 1902 when it also burned down. The original jail which stood west of US 20 near where US 301 currently intersects has since been destroyed but parts of it remain visible as part of Park Hill Cemetery off Park Avenue northeast of downtown Mount Holly.
