Mount Holly, North Carolina is a small town located in Henderson County, North Carolina. The population was 1,554 at the 2000 census. Mount Holly is the county seat of Henderson County and home to the Henderson County Courthouse and many other governmental buildings. The land that makes up Mount Holly was first settled by Scots-Irish settlers in 1765. In 1819, a post office was established at Mount Holly and it continued to be served until 1924. The first school in Mount Holly was built in 1831. Today, there are five schools within Mount Holly boundaries: two elementary schools as well as a high school which serves students from PreKindergarten through 12th grade. Of note, the Henderson County Courts Building on Main Street near Fourth Avenue West is also used as the offices for both the Sheriff’s Office and the Board of Elections for Henderson County. During World War II, Mount Holly played an important role in providing living quarters for American forces stationed in Japan during hostilities that began on December 8th 1941. More than 4500 citizens enlisted with local businesses or organizations to provide housing for troops who were housed at various military camps throughout North Carolina including Camp Kilmer (later known as Yokota Air Base), Camp Bowie (later known as Fort Bragg), Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, and Naval Ammunition Depot Supply Point Nofka where ammunition could beprocured without leaving their camps. Today, much of what once constituted part of Mount Hollymount has been lost to development or abandonment over time; however remnants like several churches still remain standing and are open to visitors today provided they purchase a permit from the town hall which can be obtained at no cost. One particular landmark that has not been lost but largely disappeared due to development islocated just off US Highway 11 outside of town limits close to Interstate 85: The Monticello Covered Bridge which spanned Little Saigon Creek back when it crossed into Henderson County from Polk County centuries ago before becoming state Highway 9A about ten miles east of present day Mount Holly proper along I-85 Old Hickory Boulevard towards Gastonia/Fayetteville Road remains fully intact despite being hit by numerous vehicles exiting I-85 southbound prior to its demolition following Hurricane Katrina - one such vehicle left an imprint large enough within original metal framework visible since demolition date upon reopening days after storm damage had occurred; currently Open House weekend event takes place each year between Memorial Day Weekend & Labor Day Weekend featuring live music by local artists plus educational exhibits presented by Historic interpreters available admission free during open house weekends

The town grew rapidly over the next few decades and eventually became a major center for commerce and culture in the region. In 1819, Mount Holly was renamed Charlotte after Queen Charlotte of England. The city’s growth continued through the antebellum period until it reached its peak during Reconstruction in 1877-1880. However, following Reconstruction, Charlotte began to experience rapid growth and decline throughout the 20th century. Today, Mount Holly is a small town with limited official functions while Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina and home to several large institutions such as Duke University and UNC Chapel Hill.
