In the early 1800s, Mount Airy was home to a small community of farmers and hunters. The area was known for its natural resources, including deer, bears, and other game. One of the earliest firearms in the area were muzzleloaders. In 1819, a man by the name of John Nance built a cabin on top of an old trading post in what is now Mount Airy. This site served as a base of operations for many years for Nance's hunting and fishing expeditions into neighboring counties. In 1831, Capt. James Robertson established himself at what is now Mount Airy with his family. He soon became interested in gunpowder development and began working on creating new types of ammunition using black powder instead of lead shot. This led to his creation of the first rifle capable of firing projectiles over 100 yards with impunity – the Rifleman rifle. The townspeople gradually moved away from farming and started buying land in surrounding counties to begin developing their businesses and homes more permanently. By 1835, Mt. Airy had become one of North Carolina's leading agricultural communities with an industry that included sugar cane production; cattle ranching; milling products such as flour and meal; cheese production; logging;and shipping products such as coal and lumber to markets around the country. During this time period there were also several major events that shaped Mount Airy's future: The discovery of gold near Charlotte in 1848 led to increased traffic through the area above Mount Airy; construction began on Interstate 95 in 1957 which eventually connected North Carolina with Virginia; and during Hurricane Floyd in 1999 local residents helped evacuate people living near Cumberland Gap National Park after some severe flooding there
