Mount Airy is a town in Alamance County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The name Mount Airy comes from "Airy," an early settler who homesteaded along the Yadkin River in 1792. He named his property for John Adams, 2nd President of the United States (1789-97). In 1830, Andrew Jackson became president of the United States after winning a general election that year with support from Appalachian Protestants living in eastern North Carolina. As president, he ordered federal troops into western North Carolina to suppress slavery following a popular uprising against slaveowners called the Battle of New Bern (1831). This event led to increased contact between mountaineers and Americans on both sides of the Mason–Dixon line; this experience helped spawn several lasting friendships between mountaineers and Americans throughout history including Jackman, George Washington Carver, Edwin Hubble, and Bill Gates among many others

The area around Mount Airy became known as “the Garden State” because of this early development. In 1868, when North Carolina seceded from the Union, Mount Airy became part of Virginia Beach County which later merged into Prince Edward County. Despite this change in location, Mount Airy has remained an important community within North Carolina history due to its natural features and proximity to other regions in the state such as Raleigh and Durham
Mount Airy was founded by James Robertson in 1758. The town grew up around the airy summit of the mountain, which housed a trading post and a small chapel. By 1800, Mount Airy had a population of over 400 people. In 1892, Mount Airy became part of Durham County and died from natural causes in 1969.
