One of the most important moments for Mount Airy came during World War II when many local men helped contribute their skills and abilities to help America achieve victory against Nazi Germany. Since then, many locals have taken an active role in making Mount Airy one of the most thriving communities in eastern Rutherford County. Some of these include founding members of both chambers of commerce - the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Raleigh (CHCR) and also becoming incorporators or directors for numerous business organizations including: American Legion Post #172; Carolina Arts Council; Kiwanis Club#527; Presbyterian Church (USA); NCSU Extension Service- Agricultural Experiment Station- Forestry Department; Southern Appalachian Regional Commission Library System; Chamber Orchestra of Eastern Carolina University

Mount Airy is a small town in western North Carolina, on the banks of the Yadkin River. The first European to sight the area was Captain John Smith in 1617 when he sailed along the river's extent from Roanoke Island. He named it Mount Airy after his home airfield in England. The first permanent settler at Mount Airy was Dr. David Blount, who arrived about 1791 and built a cabin near what is now downtown Mount Airy. He also raised chickens and pigs and began to cultivate corn, wheat, beans, potatoes, and other crops. In 1824, Dr. Blount married one of his patients—the granddaughter of Colonel James Moore—and moved his family to Mount Airy from Rocky Fork (now Tellico Hills). There they started a school for children and taught farm skills to local farmers and their families until 1828 when they left for good because of money troubles caused by the Panic of 1825. The Mount Comfort Baptist Church was organized in 1830 by Reverend Elijah Broughton with help from Drs. Abraham Hilliard and David Blount. Reverend Broughton served as pastor until 1840; thereafter Revolutions Baptist Church took over operations until 1861 when it merged with Methodism under Mr. Jno Henson Sr.. Between 1860-1910 there were 7 churches serving 4 villages within 1 mile radius serving an average population of 2400 people per church! On October 9th 1865 Confederate General Robert Ewell riding through this area halted traffic on Ulysses S Grant's "March to Richmond" leading into Petersburg Peninsula thereby preventing Union reinforcements from reaching points eastward essential for victory at Battle of Appomattox Court House less than two weeks later on November 11th 1865 resulting in Lee's surrender at Appomattox Courthouse! This event helped establish North Carolina as an effectively Confederate state!
