Mount Airy is a small town located in the state of North Carolina. The population was 3,301 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area and is home to Duke University and Roy Wilkins Elementary School. Mount Airy is known for its rich history, including a slave trade that began in 1798 and continues to this day. There are also significant concentrations of African Americans, Hispanics, Mormons, Catholics and Protestants in Mount Airy. Mount Airy has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two hundred years. The first European settlers arrived in 1798 as part of the British campaign against Cherokee Indians. They were led by Colonel John Yeoman and Major James Tryon. In 1806, General Andrew Jackson took over from Commodore William Kidd as commander of United States forces on the Ohio River. He decided to move against the Cherokee Indians who still lived on mountaintops near what is now Mount Airy. Jackson's army destroyed most of their villages before capturing many Cherokeesprisoners numbering over three thousand during what became known as "The Battle of Tugaloo". Many Cherokees died from disease or exposure during this battle which helped bring about Creek Nation's forcible removal from Georgia to Oklahoma by Ulysses S Grant in1887.(1) Aftermath: Over 1 million Cherokee people lost their homes, lands and lives; $15 billion was allocated toward compensating members of Cherokee Nation through forced removal (This amounted to $405 per capita at present). In 1799 an early settler named Nicholas Garrity built a cabin on top of what is now called Mt. Airy Chapel hill overlooking present-day Mount Airy village.(2) By 1800 there were twenty-four different families living around Mt.Airy – six men, twelve women and eighteen children.(3) Squatters continued to live here until 1827 when government land became available for purchase under Saunders Act.(4) From 1827 until 1830 government officials managed sixteen farms within one mile radiusof Mtairy Village with a total population densityof only one person per acre.(5) In 1830 all but one farm within one mile radiuswas sold off to commercial interests(6) A post office was established at MtnAiry in 1830 but no mail was ever sent because transportation could not be provided.(7) In 1836 two churches were built:(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)--oneMethodist and one Presbyterian--in response to growing demand for religious services among Appalachian mountain people.(15)--the first organized Methodist congregation west of Appalachia(16)--and school opened in 1837.--An Episcopal church was also built in 1840 but it burned down due to fire five years later(17)--making it the last Episcopal church building erected outside eastern North Carolina.--In 1843–44 Confederate soldiers camped nearby while engaged in operations along Federal lines; tents were pitched on private property adjacentto present day town limits; Captain John Hardee ordered troops attacking local militia garrisoning situeto withdraw after finding no resistance.– resultingin high civilian casualty rate––officials maintained control over military activitieswithin Town Limits throughout1845.–Army withdrewfollowingengagementWith Confederate forces at Durham skirmish lineOn April 12th 1865 Confederate General Robert E Lee surrenderedat Appomattox Court House Ulysses S Grant took commandand designated Alamance County as Johnston County,[18]Effectively endingthe Civil War

Mount Airy was located in Chatham County, North Carolina, and is the namesake of the town. The mountain was named for Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Mount (1750-1824), a veteran of the Revolutionary War who served as a member of the Board of Trade in Chatham County. In 1792, General William Howe founded what would become known as Wake Forest University in Raleigh. Reverend Dr. George White organized an Episcopal church on Mount Airy in 1802 and named it Mount Airy Female Seminary after his patron saint. In 1839, when Wake Forest relocated to Greensboro, North Carolina, Mount Airy became part of that city’s first ward and remained so until 1970 when it was annexed by Durham. Mount Airy is one of several mountains located within Chatham County which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The other mountains include Mt Hope (1922), Green Gables (1871), Pinehurst (1920), Bear Campsite (1899) and SpringHill Village (1960). The present day town of Mount Airy was formed approximately 1800 acres east of Raleigh by combining two small settlements: Westover Village and Eastover Village. Settlers from both villages arrived at different times but united under one roof about 1800 to build roads, schools, churches and stores necessary for their new community. By 1836 there were three buildings – a schoolhouse, store or mercantile building and a farm house – standing in what is now downtown mount airy . One hundred years later only six bricks remain from either building . Over time many businesses moved out from downtown to more isolated areas across town making it difficult to determine exactly how much downtown business took place before 1840 . However some evidence does exist that suggests significant amounts were conducted within what is now northeast corner between First St & Fourteenth Ave
Mount Airy was the site of a small family farmstead that operated from 1792 to 1847. The Mount Airys first settlement was on what is now Pigeon Forge Rd., about four miles northeast of present-day Mount Airy. In 1792, the farmstead consisted of only two buildings - a log cabin and a barn. By 1800, however, the farm had grown to include five homes and two barns. The Mount Airy family continued to operate their property until 1918 when it was sold to the United States Government for military use as an airfield.
