Mount Airy is a small town in the Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina, United States. The unincorporated community is located on the eastern edge of the forest, about midway between Asheville and Greensboro. The Mount Airy post office was established in 1872, and has been in operation since then. The population of Mount Airy was 1,935 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Mount Airy were Yankee traders led by John Tryon in 1793. They named it "Torytown" for General George Washington's family home at Mount Vernon. In 1814, surveyor William Davenport discovered coal seams near present-day Mount Airy and named it after him. A meeting of owners of land around present-day Mount Airy occurred on April 17, 1821 to decide how to distribute the coal royalties among themselves; this action laid the groundwork for what would become a busy mining community. In 1828, James Fenton purchased 3/8 mile (1 km) of road leading from Greenville to Charlotte with plans to make this an agricultural route linking these two cities; he named his new settlement "Mountairy". By 1830, most residents had moved into their permanent homes and businesses had opened up; a school was first built that year on Main Street. When Fort Sumter was attacked by Confederate forces on April 12, 1861, much publicity came surrounding what became known as "The Unforgiving War." Many people here supported the Confederacy due to their close proximity to military installations within miles of their homes; many also lost everything they owned during the war including their homes and businesses which were plundered by Confederate soldiers during its aftermath.
