In 1892, George Washington Carver was born in Mount Airy, North Carolina. His family moved to the area when he was young and he became interested in firearms as a result. At the age of 17, Carver founded the Mount Airy Gun Club and began to teach himself how to shoot. He soon developed a love for shooting that would last throughout his life. Carver's club met regularly to learn from one another and share tips on how to improve their shooting skills. In 1912, Carver donated his collection of shotguns and pistols to the North Carolina gun control organization, NCCC. The collection continued to be used by NCCC until it was destroyed in World War II. In 1913, Cecil Hatton purchased an 8-shot revolver from Carver's store and has been using it ever since as a personal weapon. Many members of the community still own or practice with these Firearms today."

In the early 1800s, Mount Airy was a small town located in the present day county of Tyrrell. The area now known as Mount Airy was first settled by American Indians in the late 17th century. By 1825, when North Carolina became a state, Mount Airy had been renamed for General John Buford who had fought in the Mexican-American War and then become Governor of North Carolina. In 1828, General Buford's son-in-law James McDowell founded what is now called McDowell County on the eastern edge of Mount Airy. The first settler in what is now Mount Airy was Levi Giddings who arrived around 1800. For many years, only men could own land in this area so there were no cabins or homes until after 1830 when a few families started building homes on their land from logs acquired from local forests. There were also several farms that grew crops but these were eventually abandoned because of lack of resources or competition from other landowners nearby. That same year, eighteen-year old Nathaniel Hance came toMount Airy with his father and brothers Isaac and Joseph Hance to purchase some land for themselves about two miles east of where today's Main Street meets County Road 221. Nathaniel soon developed an interest in rifle shooting and startedRange Ridge Shooting Club which still exists today as one of the most popular firearms clubs in North Carolina! He also began helping out at home with raising chickens and eggs which he would sell to customers at his grocery store on Church Street while he shot targets out back using his rifles! As word spread about Range Ridge Shooting Club and Nathaniel's skills with firearms, others began arriving to join him including Elisha Strong who arrived just before Nathaniel did; John Sisson who followed shortly thereafter; Amos Funkhouser (who probably arrived around 1820); Lewis Nail (who probably arrived around 1830); and David Ligon (who likely arrived around 1840). From these initial arrivals we can date pretty much all of our current residents back to those years!
Mount Airy is a small town located in the mountainous area of North Carolina. The population was 5,839 at the 2000 census. Mount Airy is part of Buncombe County and lies within the Asheville metropolitan area. The name "Mount Airy" was given to the mountain by an early settler, who named it after his home country, Wales. The first permanent white settlement in what is now Buncombe County was founded in 1819 by Major John Fenton, during the height of British colonizing efforts in North Carolina. At that time, there were only a few scattered Cherokee and Creek Indians living near what is now Buncombe County. In 1827, General James Kenedy purchased land from Nathaniel Banks for $1 million dollars. Kenedy intended to build a road from Raleigh to Charlotte through what are now Johnston and Henderson counties as part of his plan to open up present-day North Carolina to white settlers. However, due to disagreements about how much responsibility each county should bear for this development, construction never took place and today only a fragment of Kenedy's original road remains in operation. Today Mount Airy still has strong ties with its Welsh roots and culture despite having been Conspiracy Landlocked since before World War II! In fact, one mainstay of many Mount Airy residents' diets comes from their traditionallly made cheese – including cheddar (a type hard cheese), blue cheese (a blueberry flavored variety), brie (gouda) and camembert (Camembert-type cheese). There are also several small businesses which continue unchanged from when they first opened: local farmers markets offer fresh produce weekdays; three public libraries offer books; two Baptist churches have baptism services on Sundays; and one Methodist church offers worship services on Wednesdays & Fridays throughout the year!

In 1949, Airy had only one hotel remaining - the Mount Airy Resort Hotel - which closed its doors for good that year after more than sixty years of operation. Mount Airy has experienced many changes throughout its history including growth from a small rural community to an urban center during World War II when it became home to over 2,000 people who worked at nearby military installations. After the war ended, mountairy declined until a period of growth beginning with the establishment of shopping malls near Interstate 95 caused it to regain some popularity as a destination for residents and visitors alike during the 1990s through 2000s when it attracted attention from developers seeking to revive aging neighborhoods adjacent to I-95 en route to new jobs within Raleigh-Durham metropolitan area
Mount Airy was founded in 1792 by Colonel James Robertson as a military post on the Eastern Shore of North Carolina. The original settlers were Scots-Irish immigrants. Mount Airy became an important trading and garrison post during the Revolutionary War and was among the first settlements to be established in what is now North Carolina. During the 19th century, Mount Airy grew into a center for cotton industry and commerce. In 1877, Mount Airy was renamed Fort Mitchell after Brigadier General John B. Mitchell, who served in the American Civil War as a general officer on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Line. In 1919, Fort Mitchell was transferred from U.S. Army control to Commonwealth Control, becoming part of the University of North Carolina system.
