Mount Airy is a small town in North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,871 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville-Buncombe County metropolitan area. Mount Airy was founded in 1892 by educators and missionaries from China who had come to learn about mountain farming techniques. The first school was built on what is now Main Street. By 1902, Mount Airy had a post office, Methodist church and public library. In 1916, the town voted to become an incorporated municipality with three-member board of trustees and mayor/council system. In 1951, the central heating plant that supplied all of Asheville began producing power for Mount Airy residents using coal mined nearby. In 1984, when the Buncombe County government merged with that of neighboring Cherokee County, Mount Airy became one of two towns in Buncombe County (the other being Weaverville) within Cherokee's new consolidated government structure. From then until 2000 it was not part of any countywide organization or governance; it resided instead within Buncombe's newly formed District 6 (including Weaverville). Mount Airy has experienced some significant growth since its incorporation as a municipium: initially its population consisted mostly of farmers and their families; but over time it has attracted more people living in city centers such as Asheville and Hendersonville; as well as businesses and professionals moving into the region for job opportunities or better schools. The downtown area still retains many early 20th century architecture features including several large stone buildings used by local banks which are still standing today along with a few smaller stores dating from this period including Gourley’s Hardware Store which remains closed today but once had an inventory valued at $500 per week back in those days! Mount Airy was a small community on the north side of Raleigh, North Carolina founded in 1798 by Captain James Cook and his crew when they visited the area. The first settler, John Patton, died in 1801. In 1814, Mount Airy became part of Wake County. On May 25, 1840, Mount Airy residents voted to incorporate as a town. The town had a population of about 100 people and it was dissolved on October 1st of that year due to its low population size.
