In 1948, when Nashua County was created from Wake County, Mount Airy became one of its first planned communities. It has since grown into one of the most popular towns in Northern Carolina for retirees and tourists alike due to its easy access to Pisgah National Forest (just minutes away), diverse architecture and many recreational opportunities including skiing and hiking

Mount Airy is a small mountain located in the Pee Dee Mountains of North Carolina, about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Greensboro. It was named by Colonel John Sevier after Mount Airy, Virginia. The mountain has been known for its many springs, several coves and a few summits. The first permanent settler at Mount Airy was Nicholas Gist in 1792. In 1814, Nathaniel Hawthorne established his home there while the Moravians were proselytizing in County Tyrone. In 1827, General James Kenedyer's army besieged Goldsborough during the Battle of Gettysburg and when it was discovered that no relief could be expected from behind the mountainside, he ordered an attack on Mount Airy with 1,500 men but only 50 made it to the top before being killed or captured. After the battle, General Robert Ewell moved his headquarters from Chancellorsville to Cemetery Hill and ordered all supplies brought up to Cemetery Ridge before withdrawing July 1863 due to lack of food and ammunition. At 2 pm on July 2nd 1865 General Ewell called off his retreat and surrendered at Appomattox Court House without having fought any enemy troops. Many believe that if Ewell had continued to fight he would have been able to recapture Goldsborough which would have ended Confederate Cause
Mount Airy was founded in 1792 by George Washington and his first wife, Martha Washington. The town was named for the Mount Airy Mountains in North Carolina. In 1827, General James K. Polk found coal here and developed the town into a mining community. The town’s prosperity declined during the Depression but has since recovered with new businesses and a population of around 20,000 people today.
