In 1892, the Mount Airy Rifle and Pistol Club was formed in Mount Airy. The club was disbanded in 1924, but its rifle range remains active to this day. In 1925, the club began using a shotgun as their primary weapon. Ammunition for shotguns became available in 1928 and eventually handguns as well. In 1936, the club initiated a limited-capacity magazine program with Smith & Wesson revolvers. This program continued until 1944. In 1945, the Mount Airy Rifle and Pistol Club introduced an imported Italian pistol called the Beretta 92FS into the organization. The Beretta quickly became popular among members of the club and remains an integral part of community shooting events to this day. In 1976, the Mount Airy Rifle and Pistol Club began hosting IPSC world championships which are now considered one of the premier annual gun festivals in North Carolina.
Mount Airy, North Carolina is an unincorporated community located in Granville County, North Carolina. The Mount Airy post office was established in 1852, and remains in operation today. The community lies on the border of Bladen County and Granville County. The settlement was originally named "Mount Gilead" after a mountain in Georgia. The name change came about because Dr. John Gilead, who served as a missionary to the area, recommended that the name be changed because of General Robert Easley's military campaign against Native Americans known as "The Battle of Mount Gilead." In 1871, the town had a population of just 10 residents. However, within three years it hadgrown to over 100 people. In 1875-76, Reverend Wm Hargrave built a small church on what is now called Main Street in Mount Airy. This became the first public building in the town which still stands today. A school was also built at this time but it burned down soon after being constructed. A new school was built by Reverend Jno Wentworth and dedicated on October 1st 1888. It still stands today and is used for instruction grades Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade as well as special needs students from Granville County Schools system The first post office opened at Mount Airy on December 3rd 1850 by Samuel Gibbs with 8 mailbags sent out daily . The last mailbag was sent out on September 30th 1951 . There have been no changes to this address since then save for occasional updates on local news and events

Mount Airy was a small mountain in the town of Cary, North Carolina. It is now part of the Mount Airy National Park. The mountain was named for Captain John MountAiry, a Revolutionary War hero and member of the British military expedition that discovered America. The first Europeans to visit Mount Airy were the Cherokee Indians who had been living on the mountain since 1735. In 1819, General Andrew Jackson Expedition passed by on their way to explore Indian Territory. When they reached Cary they built a stockade around what is now known as Fort Loudoun and explored the area. They did not find any gold but they did find rich coal seams. The first white men to live in what is now Cary were Nicholas Noyes and his family who erected a log cabin in 1827. In 1838, General John Farragut Expedition crossed the mountains from east to west and arrived at Cary on December 12th after spending four days traveling over difficult terrain. On their return trip they discovered gas pockets and coal deposits on both sides of Route 1 which would later become central to American industry! After exploring much of North Carolina, including Mount Airy, General Farragut departed for Alabama on January 8th 1840 with his army encamped at Camden Barracks near Nashville awaiting orders from President James K Polk about Operation Crossroads which was planned to open up Mexico’s southern border! Unfortunately for General Farragut his orders never arrived so he marched all the way back home! Mount Airy would be visited again by Americans when Sherman’s Army invaded Georgia in April 1865 but this time there would be no peaceful resolution! Two weeks later Union troops burned down Nicholas Noyes’ cabin while he slept inside while supplies still remained inside! The next year saw another visit by General Sherman’s forces as part of his drive into South Carolina but this time he allowed access for scientific research!! From then until 1967 when it closed due to government budget cuts, mount airy was also home to several laboratories testing new technology such as radar ! Today it remains an important landmark in North Carolina history with many visitors each year seeking out its natural scenic beauty and interpretive programs
Mount Airy was founded in 1792 by George Catlett. The town grew rapidly and in 1805 the state legislature granted it a charter as an agricultural college. In 1836, Mount Airy became a part of Nottoway County.
