The community began as a collection of log cabins and farms near present-day Mount Airy High School. In 1915, a post office was established in Mount Airy with mail service from Raleigh; however, it closed in 1916. A new post office was opened in 1919, and until 1959 there were three postal zip codes for Mount Airy: 27609 (the ZIP code for Chapel Hill), 28610 (the ZIP code for Durham), and 28611 (the ZIP code for Wake Forest). Today only one zip code remains: 28612 (Mount Airy). As early as 1772 Native Americans had been living on what is now known as Mount Airy Township. When white settlers first arrived in what is now Durham County they named their land "Mountain View." In 1806 Alexander Henderson surveyed this land which he called "Henderson's Valley." He named his place after James Henderson who had acquired it from John Randolph during the American Revolution. James Henderson built an estate here called Henderson's Valley Plantation which became one of North Carolina's most important landowners through its ownership of large tracts of land along both sides of the Yadkin River. In 1819 Nathaniel Polk surveyor rode over this tract & named it "Mount Pleasant" after President James Ketchum who had been killed by Indians while hunting near Raleigh two years earlier & Private Andrew Johnson had purchased Henderson's Valley from Henderson for $2,000 cash!
