Mount Airy is a small town located in Gaston County, North Carolina. It was founded in 1868 by General James Longstreet and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for Mount Airy, a mountain in Scotland. The first gun lights were installed in Mount Airy on May 2, 1892. They were the work of Captain John S. Woodward and his crew of the USS Constitution (Nos 47-51). These lights were used to help warn sailors of obstacles ahead on their voyage from Boston to Norfolk, Virginia. In 1906, the United States Congress passed the National Firearms Act which made it illegal to possess any firearm without a license. This law made Mount Airy one of the few towns in America that didn't have any firearms until after World War II when guns began appearing again in the town as part of an effort to fight crime. Mount Airy is a small town in the Granville County, North Carolina area. The population was 1,827 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Mount Airy is located on the east side of Wilmington River and has a total land area of just under 0.4 square miles (1 km²). The first Europeans to visit Mount Airy were Dutch traders in 1655. In 1719, General James Johnston founded what would become known as Johnston's Factory on the site now occupied by Mount Airy Elementary School. By 1800, there were over twenty families living in Mount Airy with seventy nine businesses active in manufacturing and trade.. In 1807, John Randolph built his mill which still stands today near present day Presbyterian Church on Wilmington River Road. Randolphs Mill was used to grind flour for local residents before it became a power plant during World War II. In 1871, two men named Elisha Mitchell and Alfred Hite developed an idea for creating a new town around their millrace called "Mount Airy". They bought 7 acres (2 ha) of land from riverbank developer Samuel Ashe and started building houses on it that year. The town began to take off when it became home to four churches - Presbyterian, Methodist, Baptist and African American - as well as stores, schools and a post office. In 1886 another group of men purchased 117 acres (47 ha) north of where Mitchell & Hite had settled and began developing what would become known as "Mount Airy Heights". This area included much more wooded acreage than what had been available previously so construction proceeded slowly until 1893 when water restrictions caused development to stop due to lack of even necessary infrastructure such as sewage treatment facilities or access roads! After years of planning and construction by many people including future Mayor Joe Pickett Sr., Mt. Airys first electric light system went live in 1933 after being funded by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie with the goal of providing electricity for all citizens without discrimination! As early as 1907 private individuals had been investing in oil wells offshore but no one knew how they would be exploited so development stopped until 1915 when Fayette Dixon discovered gas under Geauga Lake! drilling continued intermittently throughout World War I but ceased because prices were too high while production increased significantly during World War II due largely to efforts by Colonel Harriman who saw market potential in this unusual resource! After the war ended things stalled again until 1946 when Appalachian Development Company(ADC), later renamed Appalachian Power Corporation(APC), acquired 100% ownershipof Geauga Lake Gas Field!!! After years spent trying unsuccessfully to develop this natural gas field into an industry powerhouse APC finally succeeded with their $3 million project entitled “North Carolina” which produced over fifty thousand barrels/day from 1962 thru 1978!!!
