Mount Union served as the site of two important battles during the American Civil War: fought there on April 12, 1865 and April 15-17, 1865; both Confederate victories against Union forces near what is now Gastonia County line; these events helped determine much of eastern North Carolina's future political makeup following the war . Mount Airy is located on Yadkin River and lies at an elevation of 4,046 feet (1,200 m). The community had its start in 1819 when a group of Englishmen who were seeking to establish a trading post on the Yadkin River founded what would become Mount Airy. The original settlers were farmers and their families who built homes around a small military fort they constructed known as Fort Washington. In 1837, the US government sold Fort Washington to Edwin "Buzz" Aldrich for $10,000. Aldrich used it as his business headquarters until his death in 1875. His son George Witherspoon Aldrich took over the operation and continued it until it was acquired by Coca-Cola Company in 1912. In 1937, during World War II, Mount Airy became an important site because many soldiers from nearby Raleigh were housed there while stationed at Camp Supply in nearby Durham County. During World War II many factories were set up near Mount Airy including Ford Motor Company which manufactured vehicles for service in Japan and Europe; Allied Aircraft Industries which produced Spitfires for RAF air combat; and Consolidated rubber products plant which manufactured tires for army trucks and jeeps across America.
