Mount Airy is a small mountain located in Alamance County, North Carolina. The mountain is notable for its 12,500-foot peak, Mount Airy Summit. The first Europeans to visit Mount Airy were surveyors looking for a new route to the South Carolina colony in 1775. They did not find the summit but noted that it was close by and named it after their friend and colleague Captain John Mercer who had been surveying the area at this point. Mercer had also left behind his maps of the area which helped guide future explorers such as George Washington when he explored what would become North Carolina in 1776. In 1839, Delaware County was formed from portions of Alamance and Dare Counties and included Mount Airy within its boundaries. It wasn't until 1907 that North Carolina made a formal donation to mountairyorg (later known as Alamance-Fayette Historical Commission) for preservation purposes. After years of fundraising efforts by members of the community,the gift was accepted and completed on July 1st, 1911. Mount Airy remains an important landmark in Alamance County today with many local businesses based on its slopes including restaurants like Joe's Pizza and Ruby Tuesday as well as access to several trails surrounding its summit including Randolph Gap Trail which offers stunning views all around Randolph Gorge National Recreation Area nestled between mountains on either side of town while Big Bald Mountain can be seen looming in the background just beyond town limits making this an ideal spot to spend any day out there whether you're exploring or simply taking a walk around town center where cafes line Main Street while wineries dot Route 806

Mount Airy is a small town in Alamance County, North Carolina. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham–Fayetteville metropolitan area. Mount Airy was founded by Presbyterians in 1792 and named for John Montresor, 2nd Baron Montresor. The first settler in what is now Mount Airy was James Caldwell, who built a cabin on the mountain in 1793. In 1807, the Second Seminole War led to the displacement of many settlers from Alamance County and Mount Airy became one of several settlements established along what is now I-85 south of Chapel Hill. In 1809, Mount Airy’s first school was opened under the guidance of Reverend James Caldwell Sr., also known as “The Father of Our Township”. From that point forward until 1865, it served as one of thirteen schools in Alamance County that were operated by local boards of education (later called county boards). Mount Airy's economy has always been based on agriculture and factional fighting within the Cherokee Nation have kept it isolated from other parts of North Carolina for much OF its history; however some recent development such as a new Walmart store are making strides for this small townspeople
