Mount Airy is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,547 at the 2010 census. Mount Airy is located on the Cumberland River and forms part of the Gaston-Lenoir micropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Mount Airy was James Bledsoe who built his house in 1786 on land that he purchased from Walter Jones. By 1807, there were 10 settlers living in Mount Airy. In 1846, a postoffice called Mount Airy was established with Wm. Hays as the first postmaster. In 1865, when North Carolina became a state, it included all of Gaston County including Mount Airy and made it part of the new county seat of Lenoir which had been created from parts of Johnston and Cherokee counties. The name for the town changed toMountAiry due to its location atop an airbursting peak known then as "Mt. Aire" or "Butterfly". In 1880, Methodist Episcopal Bishop John Knowles moved his family from Manteo to Lenoir where they lived until his death in 1923; after him, the Methodist Church continued to grow rapidly in mountaintop homes throughout their tenure here at "Butterfly". Henderson Congregationalist Reverend Stephen Fenton arrived here about this time and began preaching services outdoors on a large rock he named "Fenton's Rock." In 1924 Rev J Fenton's widow sold her home near Main Street to Mrs C Hargrave who ran a general store and hotel until her death in 1978; it now houses local historical Museum Of Technology.. Today much of downtown Mt Aire is still original pioneer farmstead architecture dating back to well before white settlement but many buildings have been replaced over time by more modern structures such as roadscapes or shopping centers marketed towards recent residents only - this being most notably true of civic center (now known as Mountain View) which opened upendown during last decade’s tourism boom following popular tourist attractions like Pisgah National Forest just east of town limits around which young people today gather for school field trips...It has also long been argued that certain aspects (chief among them commercial development) associated with rapid industrialization – not least access by outsiders to mountain top lands hitherto unavailable for farming – hastened both growth and decline desirably characterized thereby by some observers as `the neo-colonialismofmountainairylenoir`. Mount Airy is a small town in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. Mount Airy is located on the Cumberland River and is northwest of Wilmington. It is part of the Research Triangle Park metropolitan area. The first settlement in what would become Mount Airy was founded by Captain John Smith in 1627 as an agricultural colony named "Newfields". He and his men built a small trading post near present-day Mount Airy toexport goods from India to Britain. By 1643, Newfields had grown into a larger town with over 100 residents when it was sacked by Native American Indians for being too Protestant. The English abandoned Newfields after just three years because they found the Indian occupants more likely to attack than provide food and shelter for the settlers. In 1701, Colonel James Moore established a new military garrison at nearby Elizabeth City for protection against French侵犯 during the French and Indian War (1701-1763). One of Colonel Moore's officers, Lieutenant Samuel Johnston, proposed that Mount Airy be granted honorary status as a town under consideration for this garrison duty because it seemed like an ideal site for trade with France due to its strategic location between two major rivers within easy reach of both British and French forces. When Colonel Moore refused Johnston's request because he felt that towns were not given honorary status based on their contribution to society rather than their military value, Johnston petitioned King George II instead – resulting inMount Airy becoming an official town on November 2nd, 1702]. Mt. Airy quickly became known as one of America's most important commercial centers; many prominent Americans such as Alexander Hamilton were born or raised here including John Adams who later served as President (the first U.S.) In 1814 Congress passed legislation creating Edgecombe County which included Mt. Airy within its boundaries . Incorporation followed on October 15th 1815 . During World War I efforts were made by locals to raise money through various sales taxes in order purchase munitions needed by the war effort . A local mill closed during World War I but reopened again after hostilities ended In 1923 voters approved incorporation into Chapel Hill–Aiken Counties upon approval of plans by then Chapel Hill Mayor Harry Stamper '. On February 6th 1922 school board member Nellie Thomas announced plans to close all schools effective September 1st due primarily to lack of enrollment following stock market crashes throughout 1921-1922 which left many businesses vacant including MtnAirys largest employer until that time Stamps Paper Company ] After much public outcry Christshields Township also offered annexation but this offer was turned down due largely to financial considerations ]. Finally surrendering control over MtnAirys government back to MtnAirys citizens on January 5th 1924] mountaineers now live right next door [] Today there are approximately 350 people living insideofmountain National Sanctuary
